Why I Created The FairyCrossing

The FairyCrossing Library began with something very personal: a parent trying to help her child become a stronger reader.
My daughter was a hardworking student who performed well in the classroom, but she continued to struggle with passing Indiana’s IREAD assessment. She was only a few points away, and it was difficult to understand where the gap was. When we learned that she would need to attend summer school and retake the assessment, I began searching for additional resources we could use at home to support her.
I wanted something very specific—a resource that would allow her to read books she was genuinely interested in while also practicing important comprehension skills along the way. I wanted a workbook that could adapt to virtually any age-appropriate book rather than requiring students to read one particular story or passage.
I couldn't find exactly what I was looking for.
So I created it.
That idea became the Comprehensive Reading Log.
We began using the workbook together shortly before the end of the school year and continued during summer school. I spent time reading with my daughter, walking her through comprehension questions, discussing what she had read, and helping her think more deeply about the stories.
During that period, her IREAD score increased from 439 in May 2026 to 628 on her June 2026 retake.
I don't attribute that growth to a workbook alone. She also had the benefit of summer-school instruction, continued reading practice, and individualized support at home. But the experience showed me the value of giving children structured opportunities to read, answer questions, discuss their thinking, and receive support when they don't understand what a question is asking.
It also made me think about the children who may not always have someone available to provide that same level of one-on-one support.
That's when the idea became bigger than a workbook.
I began developing a more comprehensive approach that could give schools, educators, after-school programs, families, and community organizations tools to support young readers. The Comprehensive Reading Log grew into a broader Reading Comprehension Program that includes structured instructional guidance, student comprehension practice, teacher and facilitator training, progress-monitoring resources, verbal assessments, and tools designed to help educators identify areas where students may need additional support.
And I didn't want to wait until children were already struggling with comprehension to introduce these skills.
That vision helped inspire Fairy Llanah's Reading Corner, an interactive read-aloud experience for younger readers that introduces comprehension through stories, predictions, character questions, Thinking Time, and conversations about main idea—all while preserving the magic and enjoyment of storytime.
Today, The FairyCrossing Library brings these ideas together under one mission: helping children become stronger, more thoughtful, and more confident readers.
What began as one mother searching for a way to help her daughter has grown into a vision for supporting many more children—by working alongside the educators, families, authors, publishers, schools, and organizations that are committed to helping young readers learn and grow.
